  • Red Balloon Music are proud to present the second 'Are We Strangers Now?' show this month, with a rare and intimate acoustic performance from the amazing JP Cooper - with impressive support from American singer-songwriter David Ward and local acoustic troubadour Stefan Melbourne!
  • JP COOPER - Sometimes you see someone perform for the first time and you're just completely blown away... Playing a blend of folk, blues, soul and gospel; JP Cooper is an intriguing prospect amongst aspiring British singer-songwriters.

Listening to him perform, either alone or with his band, bears witness to an honesty, intensity and power evoked via the simplest of orchestration. His soulfully expressive, unique vocal style, the kind that cuts through a room to hush a chattering crowd in seconds, is utterly bewitching.

His unexpected vocal flights hardly prepare you for the intimacy and empathy to follow, and coupled with a clutch of sensational songs, you will find it almost impossible to believe that he has only been writing seriously for two years and performing solo for barely one.

DAVID WARD - "Think Jeff Buckley meets James Brown meets Tom Waits meets Stan Getz meets Marvin Gaye. One of my favourites in a long time." John P. McLaughlin-The Province.
Not an artist to be pigeon holed, singer/songwriter and guitarist David Ward is unwilling to fly his musical flag over any single genre or, for that matter, any facet of artistic expression.

Ever since he self-released his debut album Never Meant to Know (2006), he has been consistently honing his craft on the live circuit, having toured Canada multiple times and Japan last spring. In addition to performing as the lead singer/guitar player for The Phonix, David has held down weekly residencies in Toronto and Vancouver, playing both covers and his own music.

STEFAN MELBOURNE returns to The Castle following numerous amazing performances since our launch night last November, fast establishing him as one of Manchester's most talented singer-songwriters.
Drawing on the emotionally expressive sounds of Nick Drake and Tim Buckley, Stefan is no stranger to urban poetry and lyrics of raw emotion, and has caught the limelight through his composite style that aligns itself with both indie-folk and country blues.
Tapping into a mature repertoire of seminal American folk musicians such as Lead Belly, Sonny Boy Williamson and Robert Johnson, his interesting blend of contemporary lyrics alongside a classic folk, almost bluegrass approach, sees his efforts fall comfortably on the ears of Bon Iver fans and Ray Lamontagne followers alike.
